OLED is the preferred display technology in high-end smartphones from the world’s leading manufacturers because it offers superior screen performance, flexible form factors and durability. However, the traditional manufacturing method of using fine metal masks to pattern red, green and blue pixels on substrates has not made it practical to scale OLED display manufacturing to the larger glass panels used to make displays for tablets, PCs and TVs.
Applied’s MAX OLED solution is a breakthrough technology that deposits and encapsulates each pixel individually using a specially designed maskless process. This proprietary manufacturing method enables excellent pixel placement accuracy, more than doubling the aperture ratio. The result are larger displays with up to 3X higher brightness and resolution up to 2,000 pixels per square inch. The MAX OLED solution also reduces display power consumption by up to 30% and delivers up to a 5X increase in display lifetime.
The MAX OLED solution is more than equipment—it combines a proprietary pixel architecture with an integrated process flow for producing best-in-class OLED pixels, including the equipment required for OLED deposition, encapsulation and eBeam testing and inspection. The MAX OLED solution utilizes Applied’s vertical evaporation system and is integrated with the company’s industry-leading thin-film encapsulation technology.
